June 17, 2026 (BAKU) – The Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, Amna Mirghani, and her Azerbaijani counterpart, Taleh Kazimov, signed a memorandum of understanding for banking cooperation in Baku on Wednesday.

Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the agreement aligns with the central bank’s efforts to open up to the international financial system and reintegrate into global banking networks.

Mirghani emphasized the importance of historical ties between Sudan and Azerbaijan, noting that the MoU opens new horizons for economic and trade cooperation, particularly in expanding import and export opportunities.

The ministry statement added that the memorandum establishes a general framework for developing correspondent banking relations, opening commercial bank branches in both nations, and facilitating training and knowledge exchange.

Kazimov affirmed Azerbaijan’s support for Sudan in regional and international forums, describing the meeting and the agreement as a primary step toward strengthening economic and trade relations.

He urged Azerbaijani banks to establish correspondent relations with Sudanese banks to facilitate cross-border payment settlements.

Kazimov also expressed readiness to transfer expertise to the Central Bank of Sudan and Sudanese commercial banks through short-term training and secondment programs to strengthen practical training initiatives.
