Darfur IDP group warns of catastrophic camp conditions as war drags on
July 5, 2026 (TAWILA) – The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur warned on Sunday of worsening humanitarian conditions in displacement camps, stating that the escalating crisis threatens the lives of millions due to the ongoing war and dwindling humanitarian response.
Displacement camps across Darfur are facing a rapid deterioration in humanitarian conditions as the prolonged conflict has triggered a widespread collapse of infrastructure and public services, particularly the health sector, while blocking the delivery of aid to large numbers of affected people.
Adam Regal, the spokesperson for the coordination, told Sudan Tribune that children and women are bearing the brunt of the crisis. He noted that worsening malnutrition and shortages of food and safe water have been accompanied by rising psychological trauma and cases of gender-based violence.
Regal added that the camps face an escalating humanitarian and health crisis under extremely difficult living conditions, leaving thousands of displaced families exposed to daily risks.
A large number of health facilities have stopped functioning as the spread of infectious diseases such as malaria, measles, and watery diarrhoea has intensified, amid an acute shortage of medicines and medical supplies, Regal explained.
He pointed out that the economic collapse, skyrocketing commodity prices, and the continuous devaluation of the Sudanese pound have deepened the crisis. This is compounded by a severe lack of water and sanitation services, increasing the risk of epidemics, especially with the onset of the rainy season.
Regal appealed to the international community and humanitarian organizations to scale up their urgent response by providing food and medicine, rehabilitating health services, and ensuring the unhindered and depoliticized delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need.
He also called on the warring parties to halt fighting, warning that the continuation of the war will exacerbate the suffering of millions of displaced people in Darfur, as well as those affected in the Kordofan states and the Blue Nile region.
