Seventeen mining companies enter gold production in South Kordofan
July 26, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company announced on Sunday that 17 mining firms have advanced to the gold production phase in South Kordofan state out of 61 companies operating in the region.
The announcement followed a meeting in Khartoum between the company’s Director General, Mohamed Taher Omer, and South Kordofan Governor Mohamed Ibrahim Abdel Karim to discuss mining operations and sector challenges.
Omer praised the state government’s efforts to sustain mining activities despite conflict-related challenges, reiterating the company’s commitment to supporting host communities and building local development partnerships.
He noted that local executive authorities helped create a conducive environment for firms to resume operations and anticipated further expansion in the state’s mining sector in the coming period.
Governor Abdel Karim stated that his administration resolved issues regarding local community revenue shares, calling on host communities to support active companies to maximize economic returns for both the state and nation.
South Kordofan is a major hub for Sudanese gold production, though key areas such as Talodi and Qadeer face recurring environmental concerns related to cyanide use in gold extraction.
The sector serves as Sudan’s critical source of foreign exchange as other exports have declined due to the war, with first-half 2026 performance exceeding target metrics.
