Sudan seeks Kuwait economic support as war-battered economy deepens crisis
August 19, 2026 (KUWAIT CITY) – A high-level Sudanese delegation led by the foreign and finance ministers arrived in Kuwait on Wednesday, delivering a letter from army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to the Kuwaiti leadership and seeking crucial economic support.
Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem, Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim, and Central Bank Governor Amina Mirghani are holding three days of talks with Kuwaiti officials and Arab development funds.
Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Hamad al-Sabah received the letter on behalf of Emir Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Kuwait’s state news agency reported, with a focus on bilateral ties and regional stability.
Sudan’s economy has been largely paralyzed since April 2023, when conflict erupted between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, wrecking productive sectors, basic infrastructure, and commercial banking channels.
Sudanese financial authorities aim to secure development financing and establish cross-border banking mechanisms to help stabilize trade and fund eventual reconstruction efforts.
