Sudan army commander says UN and UAE cannot halt military advances

September 1, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – A senior Sudanese military commander and Sovereign Council member, Yasir al-Atta, said on Tuesday that neither the UN Security Council nor the United Arab Emirates could halt the army’s advances, vowing multi-pronged assaults on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Al-Atta’s remarks follow a U.S. draft proposal submitted to the UN Security Council that seeks to expand the Darfur arms embargo to all of Sudan, including a ban on drones.

Addressing reserve troops in western Omdurman, al-Atta said the military was preparing a major offensive in the coming days.

“You will advance, and your brothers will advance from many directions. All capabilities are available,” al-Atta told recruits. “By air and by land, we will attack them from every direction.”

“The Security Council will not be able to stop us, nor will the Emirates or the conspiring regional states, because we are in the right,” he added.

Al-Atta described the RSF as a “terrorist militia” and accused the UAE of backing the group, asserting that the military would defeat the rebellion.

The Sudanese military has repeatedly accused the UAE of supplying weapons and logistical support to the RSF in the conflict, an allegation the Gulf state has denied.

In July, the army regained territory across North Kordofan state, including the towns of Bara, Jabrat al-Sheikh, Umm Sayala, and Um Qirfa, shifting front lines and opening logistical routes toward the neighbouring Darfur region.

The military has since stepped up airstrikes and drone attacks targeting RSF positions across Kordofan and Darfur, aiming to sever cross-border supply lines ahead of broader ground operations.
