Air strike hits UN food convoy in Sudan’s South Kordofan, WFP says

September 2, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – An air strike struck two trucks carrying United Nations food assistance outside the town of Dilling in Sudan’s South Kordofan state, destroying emergency supplies intended for thousands of hungry civilians, the World Food Programme said on Wednesday.

The vehicles, clearly marked with WFP banners and flags, were travelling toward the state capital of Kadugli when they came under aerial attack on August 30.

More than 50 metric tons of food, including cereals, yellow split peas, vegetable oil, and salt, were destroyed in the strike, eliminating rations meant to sustain 5,800 people for a month.

South Kordofan has experienced sustained clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and an alliance formed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North faction led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, who have fought for control of vital transit arteries linking Dilling and Kadugli.

The WFP remained silent on who carried out the strike, refraining from assigning blame to any of the warring factions active in the area.

The attack represents the eighth time this year that aerial bombardment has damaged WFP premises or disrupted its relief efforts across Sudan.

Around 58,000 residents in Kadugli currently face emergency levels of food insecurity or worse, depending heavily on direct humanitarian food deliveries amid recurring supply blockades.

Reiterating calls for an end to hostilities against aid missions, the WFP urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilian lives, personnel, and aid infrastructure.
