Sudan army chief visits Eritrea for second round of talks in two months

September 4, 2026 (ASMARA) – Sudanese army chief and Sovereign Council head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived in Asmara on Friday for talks with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, marking his second visit to the country in less than two months.

Burhan previously visited the Eritrean capital on July 17 for discussions with Afwerki.

The Sovereign Council described the trip in a statement on Friday as a “fraternal” visit aimed at holding bilateral discussions with the Eritrean leader.

The two sides discussed relations between Sudan and Eritrea, focusing on ways to enhance cooperation and coordination to serve their mutual interests, according to the statement.

Ties between Khartoum and Asmara have grown closer since the outbreak of war in Sudan, with both nations stepping up political and security coordination.

Eritrea plays an influential role in the Sudanese crisis due to its shared land border of more than 600 km (370 miles) with Sudan’s Kassala and Red Sea states.
