Sudanese army advances in North Kordofan, captures Hamrat al-Wiz

September 6, 2026 (EL OBEID) – The Sudanese army and allied forces seized the town of Hamrat al-Wiz in North Kordofan state on Sunday, driving out the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and tightening control over a critical supply corridor to the capital.

The advance follows a swift military offensive in late July that cleared the RSF from large swathes of the state, restoring control over the vital Export Road and pushing paramilitary fighters into western redoubts near the border with Darfur.

Securing Hamrat al-Wiz broadens the army’s defensive buffer around the garrison towns of Jabrat al-Sheikh and Bara while safeguarding commercial and civilian transit along the principal highway linking North Kordofan to Khartoum.

“The army, the Joint Force, and Special Task units have liberated Hamrat al-Wiz and expelled the RSF,” field commander Malik al-Burof said in a video filmed outside the town’s captured police headquarters. He pledged that troops would advance toward the group’s final footholds in the region.

Military sources said the army is preparing an assault on Sodari, one of North Kordofan’s largest localities, deploying heavy reinforcements through Bara and Jabrat al-Sheikh to press westward toward Darfur.

The ground offensive has been paired with near-daily military drone strikes against RSF convoys, bases, and mobile units operating across western North Kordofan.
