Sudan’s Burhan calls economic crisis another battle country will win

September 18, 2026 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said on Friday that the country’s worsening economic crisis is another battle it will win alongside its war against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Sudan has faced severe economic strain over the past two weeks, driven by a sharp depreciation of the local currency and surging prices for basic goods and services.

Speaking after Friday prayers in the capital Khartoum, Burhan said the war had taken multiple forms and described the current inflation and resource shortages as part of the broader conflict.

“We will emerge victorious from it, just as we drove the rebellion out of Khartoum and other cities,” Burhan said, adding that the military campaign against the RSF would continue until the group is defeated.

Burhan also renewed his rejection of any externally imposed political solutions, insisting that Sudan’s crisis must be resolved through internal dialogue.

Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim separately defended the government’s economic management on Friday, telling a gathering of tribal leaders that the economy was resilient despite the hardships facing civilians.

Ibrahim attributed the market volatility to currency speculation and an orchestrated economic campaign to destabilise the state.

“The war with the rebellion will end soon,” Ibrahim said, adding that authorities remained committed to regaining territory so displaced civilians could return home.
