Sudan civilian coalition, Norway discuss war-ending efforts at UN

September 22, 2026 (NEW YORK) – A delegation from Sudan’s Civil Democratic Alliance of the Forces of the Revolution (Somoud), led by former prime minister Abdalla Hamdok, met on Tuesday with Norwegian State Secretary Andreas Kravik to discuss efforts to end the war and address the humanitarian crisis, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Regional and international mediators have been pushing for a ceasefire and trying to establish a political roadmap to end the conflict, but diplomatic efforts face persistent challenges amid active fighting and sharp disagreements among warring parties and political forces over postwar arrangements.

In a press statement, the Somoud coalition said it briefed the Norwegian official on the war’s fallout and the humanitarian situation, urging Oslo to help boost humanitarian relief and press for an unconditional truce alongside an inclusive political process that tackles the root causes of the crisis.

The coalition stressed that any political track must lead to sustainable peace and restore Sudan’s democratic transition toward civilian rule.

For his part, Kravik updated the Sudanese delegation on Norway’s initiatives to support peace, including its participation in a joint meeting scheduled for Wednesday in New York between members of the Quad and Quint groupings working on the Sudanese crisis.

The Norwegian official pledged that his country would continue its diplomatic efforts to halt the fighting, emphasising that any settlement must reflect the Sudanese people’s demands for freedom, peace, justice, and civilian democratic governance.
