Sudan opens jet fuel and furnace oil imports to break market monopoly

November 7, 2026 (KHARTOUM, Sudan) – The fuel crisis in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, eased on Saturday, with gasoline supplies improving significantly and diesel to a lesser extent, as authorities announced new fuel injections to meet national needs.

Khartoum has faced a severe fuel shortage for weeks, leading to transport scarcity, higher fares, and increased prices for essential goods.

Ahmed Abdel Rahman, a local resident, said wait times at petrol stations had dropped noticeably.

He waited only 40 minutes for gasoline on Saturday but said diesel queues persisted.

He called for improved diesel supplies, noting its direct impact on public transportation and freight costs.

On the black market, a gallon of gasoline reached 70,000 Sudanese pounds in recent days, compared to 50,000 pounds at official stations.

Diesel prices on the parallel market hit 80,000 pounds per gallon, up from the official rate of 49,000 pounds.

Nabta Petroleum Company said in a statement on Saturday that vehicle queues had completely disappeared at its gasoline pumps, calling it a sign of stabilized supply.

The company said it continues efforts to secure diesel and cited optimistic indicators that diesel queues will also diminish soon.

Ali Abdel Rahman, undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, said significant quantities of gasoline and diesel are being unloaded from ships at Port Sudan.

In a Saturday statement, he said the unloading and supply operations follow a technical plan to meet the needs of various economic and service sectors.

The ministry has begun pumping substantial fuel quotas to the states to stabilize markets and ensure transport flow, he added.

For Khartoum, the undersecretary said pumping to distribution outlets and service stations has intensified to meet actual demand and eliminate supply bottlenecks.
