Sudan home to 91,500 refugees: official

January 11, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s Refugees Commission declared that the country is home to 91,500 refugees who are located mainly in the east and border regions with countries experiencing conflict.

The deputy commissioner for refugees Abdullah Suleiman Mohammed told the government-sponsored Sudanese Media Centre (SMC) website that the refugees who are receiving direct support from the government are estimated to be around 75,700 who are present in nine camps.

Mohammed added that they are also receiving funding from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The official said that the support they provide is in the form of health services, water, sanitation, education, environment and food

He also mentioned that the refugees inside Sudan are comprised mainly of Eritreans, Ethiopians and Somalis.
