Sudan’s IDO suspends humanitarian activities in Upper Nile
July 11, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The Islamic Dawa Organization (IDO) in Sudan announced the temporary suspension of its humanitarian activities In the Upper Nile Sate as fighting between the warring parties continue to escalate in the region.
The humanitarian group which is headed by the former Sudanese president Abd al-Rahman Siwar al-Dhahab said its premises were destroyed during the fighting between the government and rebel forces
In statements to the official SUNA, al-Dhahab reiterated the IDO readiness to resume its humanitarian activities as soon as the security situation on the ground improves.
The group, which its leadership is close to the Sudanese government but funded by Gulf countries, is providing food, medical services and education in South Sudan.
The oil producing Upper Nile state is the theatre of clashes between the South Sudanese army and SPLM-IO rebels led by the former vice-president Riek Machar since December 2013.
The state capital Malakal changed hands several times between the warring factions.
Multiple other aid agencies, including MSF, and World Vision have taken similar decisions since the beginning of this year.
