NEBE Rejects Application Of Three Parties Forming Coalition

NEBE Rejects Application Of Three Parties Forming Coalition
Addis Ababa, 3/21/2006

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) rejected the application submitted by the All Ethiopian Unity Party (AEUP), the Ethiopian Democratic League (EDL) and Rainbow Ethiopia: Movement for Democracy and Social Justice to form a coalition, as it was not presented in accordance with the regulation of political parties’ registration proclamation and the statutes of the respective parties.

NEBE told Ethiopian News Agency on Tuesday that the document requesting to form the coalition was not submitted based on legal grounds.

The Board rejected the application after verifying the document submitted on March 6, 2006 by the three parties.

It said the general assemblies of the three political parties, the highest decision making organs, have not approved the coalition in accordance with the statutes of the respective parties.

Besides, two of the three individuals, who put their signatures on the document, are not executive members of the parties, the Board said.

There is no evidence whether the two individuals have been named as temporary or standing executives in charge of facilitating the coalition, it said.

The document has also failed to include statute, logo and objectives of the unified party, the Board said.

The three parties did not put their official seal on the document, it said.

Based on these grounds, the Board said it had rejected the application forming the Coalition.
