SPLM obtains Sudan embassy in US, deputy head of UN delegation

Aug 16, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Two of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) ambassadors have been appointed in Washington and New York, one as Sudanese ambassador in USA and the second as deputy head of Sudan Mission to the United Nations.

Sudan has nominated Mr John Ukac Lueth as Sudan’s ambassador to the USA and Dr. Akec Khoc Acieu as deputy head of Sudan’s delegation to the UN.

While Lueth is expected to officially present his credentials to the US Administration soon. Akec will be in New York by the end of the year.

The SPLM has been allocated the top posts at five diplomatic missions including the USA, Japan, Spain, Kenya and Uganda.

On Saturday 27 May 2006, President Omar al-Bashir issued a republican decree appointing, in different grades, 21 ambassadors, 16 from the SPLM and other Southern political groups and 5 from the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and the Democratic Unionist Party.

The Sudanese Foreign Minister, Lam Akol, said that the appointment of ambassadors in compliance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) represented an important step in implementation of the agreement.
