Jonglei census begins amicably amidst challenges

By Philip Thon Aleu

April 23, 2008 (BOR, Jonglei) – The fifth Sudan Housing and Population census kicks off peacefully in Jonglei – the state feared volatile, census officials elaborate Wednesday April 23 despite recent attacks carryout allegedly by Murle cattle raiders.

census_takers_in_Bor1.jpgSecurity was tight in the night of April 21/22 here in the state capital Bor to enhance peacefully beginning of the first ever-full Southern Sudan’s census. A good number of armed police guided enumerators vigilantly until Tuesday midday. “Everybody should remain at his or her home, we are still marking the beginning of census,” a mobile commentator announced at Central Street of Bor town Tuesday.

However, reports obtained from Kongoor in Twic East County (about 60 miles north of Bor town) over the weekend gave negative anticipation to security dynamic trend. “They attacked us at around 7pm killing at least one man,” Akuol Akech, a victim of Saturday attack at her village in Kongoor- where two children are reportedly abducted, told reporters at Bor civil hospital Sunday. It is not the first time this year (2008) to obtain security ‘negative results.’

Another two children were abducted in Jale payam, Bor County last Month, a development seen as resumption of Murle tribesmen’s atrocities that were switched-off by 2008’s Christmas exit of former governor Philip Thon Leek and entrance of Southern Sudan pronounced leader Kuol Manyang Juuk to state governorship.

A little is believed to have been achieved by South Sudan’s Army engaged in disarming process at Pibor – Murle headquarters.

Despite recent attack in Twic East, census began peacefully on Tuesday. Duk and Akoba Counties are reportedly peaceful. No information could be availed from Pibor due to lack of network there.

However, enumerators carrying out census in villages around Bor town made a surprise visit here Tuesday claiming village chiefs turned down shortage of food items as their request. “I’m here to buy some edible for survival man,” Achiek majok told Sudan Tribune what he calls “beginning of the challenges.”

Village chiefs maintained that the census is fully financed by the government and enumerators just wanted to boost their economy. “I am told enumerators refused deployment to counting sites because they were not paid,” one of chiefs reacted when asked to contribute food items that include goats, sheep or cereals. Enumerators were paid hundreds of Sudanese Pound last week as “appreciation funds” for the national census.

The other challenges includes heavy rain that started a day ahead of census within and around Jonglei capital- Bor Town- surging roads inaccessibility, subsiding interfering with writing task. The number of enumerators put at around 13,000 by the state director of census, mosquitoes and poor feeding in some remote villages will too disturb the national census officials in Jonglei state.

But a group of enumerators, who left on Saturday to various villages to carryout census in Bor County Payams, promised full commitment. “Whether there is no food, no mosquito net or mention them, I’m obliged to my duty,” Samuel Malueth said as he left for census to Konbek (12 miles eastern of Bor town) on Saturday.

    Deng Akot Agut:

If I can ask you simple questions, why do you pluralized all Murle? do you think I had participated in child abduction too?

When you go to school, the first thing for you to learn is not how to put b,o, and y together to form “boy” instead, learn wisdom including the fact of knowing how to treat criminal as individual. A lot Bor had been arrested for stealing children from their own neighbours in Bor and take them to Murle for sale, can I say all Bor do that? For example in 2004 2 guys were arrested in Vivino village and jailed in Pibor if you want good examples.

Secondly, what Thon was talking about was what happened last month, and remember, everywhere in the world, normally people need to gather enough evidence to convict the suspect. Do you believe that Murle took those kids, how do you know if could be bad Bor guys like the one of 2004? If you could answer all those questions of mine it will be helpful.

Please keep your empty head of village little bit down, we don’t want another war between Bor and Murle again, But if you want to incite it again, better be there at the battle for you to taste the consequences yourself, don’t try to send innocent Bor to go and die like last November while those who orchastrated that fight count bottles of beer in towns.

Yes, Murle who abduct other people’s children must be punished but not all tribe, this is just like beating you to comma because another Bor stole my bag.I don’t care the way how those criminals are punish because I am tired of those who normally cause problems to the all tribe while their benefit of stealing kids reflect nothing in community level.Believe me, some of us could be the first to punish those criminals.

Anyway Mr. Akot,Try to shut your ugly mouth about Murle or you may open it for good one day.

I hope you take my advice.

    God bless.

    JAMES JAMES

Dear james james, you misunderstood all that I wrote on this site about the above article yesterday.
“I mean those who are doing that practice not the whole of murle as a tribe.” Mr James I know very well that you did not went to school only to be after tribes, you went to school so that you can atleast bring alittle change to your community and to Sudan as whole. But brother James, what I have seen from you on this web is that yo are far beyond what I expect of you and this conveinced me that your uncivilized murle will remains uncivilized forever. Look here brother James the question was ” why is it that many of the journalist talked negatively about your Murle always?”. You fail to answered it and instead you attacked me barbariclly. Answer the question and you must know that I have no bip with any murle man in Jonglei.

Deng Agut-tungduon Akol, a man far away from tribalism.
