Third Sudanese Red Crescent volunteer killed in two months

May 24, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) today confirmed the death of Bashir Shuaib, a volunteer with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS). Shuaib was killed on May 23 while carrying out his vital first aid duties, marking the third SRCS volunteer to lose their life in the line of duty within the last two months. The statement did not provide any details about the circumstances of his death or the location where it occurred. This loss brings the total number of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff killed globally this year to 21, highlighting the immense risks faced by humanitarian workers in conflict zones. The IFRC vehemently condemns all acts of violence against aid workers and reiterates its call for the respect and protection of humanitarian personnel under all circumstances. “They are #NotATarget,” the organization emphasized in a statement.
