July 29, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s annual inflation rate surged to 136.67% in the first half of 2024, the state statistics agency reported on Monday, marking the first official data release since the conflict erupted in April last year.

The surge was driven by soaring food and medicine prices, as well as increases in housing rents, the agency said. The highest regional inflation rate was recorded in the Northern State at 721.71%, while the lowest was in East Darfur State at 109.61%.

January saw the highest monthly increase, at 18.32%, driven by rising costs of healthcare, housing and food.

The conflict has displaced millions and disrupted Sudan’s economy, causing widespread loss of livelihoods and pushing food prices out of reach for many. The Sudanese pound has also plummeted against the dollar.

The inflation data underscores the economic challenges facing Sudan as it seeks to recover from the conflict.
