Soldiers from southern Sudan army, SLPA, reportedly shot in the air to chase Ugandan farmers in Gwere Parish in Lefori from their fields on Tuesday, saying they were on the Sudanese side of the border.

On Wednesday, Ugandan protesters attacked Sudanese nationals and southern Sudanese refugees in the area forcing closure of Afogi customs Post, a key trade gateway to the Southern Sudan.

“After through checking of the accusation by the SPLA units in Kajo Kaji County we found out that the attackers are not members and have nothing to do with the SPLA,” said the SPLA official spokesperson Maj. Gen. Kuol Dein Kuol.

He further suspected “armed criminal who were instigated by anti-peace elements ” of attacking attacked Leforei Sub-county in order to “damage” the friendly relations between Southern Sudan and Uganda.

He further said the SPLA is ready to cooperate in investigation of the incident.

Yesterday the Ugandan minister of information, Ms Kabakumba Matsiko called for calm and denied reports about the deployment of troops to quell the riots saying “The anti riot only intervened to restore order and calm down the situation.” The armed protesters threatened to cross into Southern Sudan.

Uganda is embroiled in border disputes with Sudan, mainly to do with diminishing border markings over time, triggering disputes as demand for land and resources continue.

The Sudanese First Vice President and President of Southern Sudan Government, Salva Kiir Mayadrit and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni are expected to meet in November over the border dispute along their common border.
