Nigerian diplomat to be appointed as head of Darfur peacekeeping mission

December 1, 2009 (WASHINGTON) – The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon intends to appoint the Nigerian diplomat Ibrahim Gambari as head of the joint U.N.-African Union peacekeeping mission in Sudan’s devastated Darfur region, multiple sources told Sudan Tribune.

Gambari will succeed the Congolese Rodolphe Adada who became unpopular with Western capitals towards the end of his term after declaring that the conflict in Darfur is over and degraded it to “low intensity” violence.

Adada bitterly defended his tenure and lashed out at critics in the UN Security Council (UNSC) who accused him of being inefficient.

Last September, the Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir who was indicted last March by the International Criminal Court (ICC) said that “enemies of Sudan did not like Adada’s report on Darfur, and this is why they refused to renew him”.

Bashir awarded Adada the Nilain Order, first class in recognition of his efforts in Darfur peacekeeping mission.

The UN website states that Gambari holds the record of being the longest serving Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations (January 1990 to October 1999). He was born in Ilorin, Nigeria, on November 24, 1944, and attended Kings College, Lagos, as well as the London School of Economics where he obtained a B.Sc. (Economics) degree in Political Science with a specialty in International Relations. Professor Gambari received his M.A. in 1970 and his Ph.D. in 1974, both in Political Science/International Relations from New York’s Columbia University.

Since 2007, Gambari served as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Adviser on the International Compact with Iraq and Other Issues. He was also the UN Chief special envoy to Myanmar.

The appointment will likely please Nigeria which was angered not to be offered the position of the post of the commander of the African Union-United Nations Mission on Darfur (UNAMID).

UNAMID was previously headed by Nigerian General Martin Agwai and was succeeded by Rwandan Lieutenant General Patrick Nyamvumba.

Nigerian troops along with Rwandans’ comprise the majority of the UNAMID force.

You better create meaningful jobs in your countries, otherwise depending on war-ravaged places like Darfur is not a long strategy. You just make fun of Darfur civil war, other than working hard to stop it.Look at how they are crumbling for positions and wealth in Sudan.

    Hey Gambari!

This country is not a business area where you think you can make huge profits that you can take to your Nigeria.

Make sure you do the right things as we Sudanese need. The former man was bribed by Omer to hide the under deals which was not good at all.

Guys let’s see if the man is coming for business reasons as I see because somewhere in the news paper Nigeria is said to have claimed for one the higher positions before.

Condolence my poor people in Darfur, an other African figure, Nigerian, an icon of corruption, I have witnessed those Nigerians steal the AU assets from vehicles to camp beds through Chad, and how general ogawi and Adada turned the MSA of rebel group’s to their pocket, shameful . we still remember how the former president obassanjo betrayed, sold the Darfur Issues, this new appointed man, like the others will add nothing to the peace process in Darfur ,he will immediately bribed by the genocidairesEl Bashir and will declare that: no genocide no war no rape , nothing in darfur , we have lost confidence in these nefarious so called Africans leaders.

It is very hypocrite to bring Nigerians as peace keepers in Darfuur region, simply because Nigerians are the most deceptive people in the African continent, they have destroyed even their own country with all kind of criminal activities, they can eat you alive, so I must advise my people of Sudan to be wise enough not to allow those evils to spoil their country, they aren’t there to protect any Darfurian but just there to seek the way out to the poverty is burning in their corrupt country. They are overpopulated as they reproduce like flies with out any minimum consideration about how they will take care of their kids, they are indeed the most backward or retarded people in our black continent, they are shameless and thus can do any thing that may bring them monies, beware of them!
