Sudan confirms five swine flu deaths

December 28 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese health authorities have confirmed the death of five people infected with influenza A (H1N1) in the country.

There are some 145 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Sudan said Kamal Abdel-Gadir Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health in an interview with Al-Jazeera TV broadcasted on Sunday. He said only five people died from the epidemic disease.

The Sudanese official who said there were 300 suspected cases said all the confirmed cases came from outside the country.

Kamal further said his ministry has set up 13 centers to treat infected people in Khartoum, besides one center in each state of the country.

He also said that Sudan had proceeded to import vaccines in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) adding that the first batch of the vaccines would be available in the country next January.

He stressed that the health ministry did not decided to engage a systematic vaccination because there is no major threat for the time being.
