Trade unions in Juba calls for backing on decent jobs
January 13, 2010 (JUBA) — Leaders of trade unions in South Sudan have called for backing on decent jobs in the region, stressing the urgent need to stop employers from exploiting workers.
The group also called on companies that reduced their workforce in connection with the world economic crisis to re-engage workers since global economic efforts seems to be improving.
Anthony Zandigo and James Tut, both leaders of trader unions, representing their states in the regional capital of Juba said in an interview with Sudan Tribune today that high unemployment levels contribute to exploitation of the labor force.
They said unions seek strong advocacy from all stakeholders for better understanding between employers and laborers so that employers should not take advantage of high unemployment levels to exploit workers in terms of remuneration.
Of course there are no job opportunities in the region making it possible to increase the employment rate, but this should not be taken advantage to abuse labor, they said.
“Although we do understand challenges facing the regional government in Juba, we still request authorities increase efforts ensuring that jobs being offered and those to be created should be subjected to a decent work plans.”
Zandigo said workers should exercise their rights and that social security should be taken into consideration by stakeholders in the attainment of the decent work agenda.
He continued to say the region looks forward to forging high productivity which can only be achieved through a motivated workforce.
He said the labor unions have been advocating policies encouraging the regional government sell better approaches to foreign investors in areas with potentials for investment.
“We are also calling upon companies that sidelined workers as a result of allegations involving global economic meltdown,” said the unions.

Trade unions in Juba calls for backing on decent jobs
Anthony Zandigo and James Tut,
Great professional move guys, atleast you are thinking right in that corrupted Juba government. The workers’s rights and better compensations within decent, dignified work environment.
But Juba was already in social decay before the world economic crisis. It is not relevant excuse because it never was better before the world economic crisis. The trader/labor union has to work with that corrupted government of self-service to create atleast a decent work envoronment.
Lacks of jobs contributes to the break-down of functioning security. It is bigger than Labor/trade union. The gov’t roped the citizens of economic securities while the same gov’t is making corruption deals with international companies. It doesn’t have to be a class struggle(Proletariats against bourgoeis) in Juba. Unless communist mentality still exists in south sudanese’ elites in the government.

Not because of no jobs but because of over employment of foreigners increases or discourages employment opportunities to our local population.
GOSS should stop employing prostitutes from East Africa so that Southern Sudanese get jobs easily.
