Independent South Sudan would be a sustainable state, speaker Wani says

February 10, 2010 (KHARTOUM) –An independent state in South Sudan will be a viable one with means to survive and flourish, a senior official in the semi-autonomous region said today.

The Speaker of South Sudan legislative assembly James Wani Igga told the London based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper in an interview that the South will be a nation based on law and citizenship if it chooses to secede in the 2011 referendum.

He dismissed speculations that the South is not qualified to run its own affairs saying that they are circulated by parties that want the region to appear weak for “psychological pressure”.

Igga gave an example of neighboring Eritrea “with less resources and population yet managed to become a state in the political map of the world after separating from Ethiopia”.

This week the Sudanese 2nd Vice President Ali Osman Taha said in Cairo this week during his visit that secession “would be a leap into the darkness because Southerners have no experience in government and a negative message to Africa”.

Most observers expect that Southerners will overwhelmingly vote for secession versus remaining as part of united Sudan.

On the elections, Igga expressed confidence that SPLM candidate Yasir Arman would win the presidential elections against president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir who is standing for reelection.

“90% of the Southerners will vote for Arman and we have a large base in the north and we will focus there because the south is guaranteed” he said.

The SSLA speaker accused the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) led by Bashir of backtracking on an agreement to overcome disputed census because of Arman’s nomination.

Last month, the NCP announced that it will not nominate any of its members to run against South Sudan president Salva Kiir and urged the SPLM to do the same and withdraw Arman candidacy. However, the ex-Southern rebel rejected the offer.

It is widely believed that the dominant party is concerned that between the 12 candidates Bashir may not attain the 51% required to win the elections forcing a second round in which opposition parties may back Arman.

    Hon.Wani Igga.
You inspired many in the south with your political styles, i personally like you comments at this time when we are preparing for the election, ofcause NCP/NIF comments made by its leader 2nd VP Taha in Eguipt saws that Khartoum is not ready to lead the south go, and that Taha himself being the signitory to the CPA had no values for the south since he ( Taha) wanted the south to Islamic state.
    SHAME ON THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE ARE NOW A SEPERATE STATE , THE SOUTH SUDAN REPUBLIC
LONG LIVE HON. WANI IGGA, LONG LIVE SPLM, LONG LIVE SOUTH SUDAN

Speaker Wani Igga is by far the most respected leader in the South.
Hopefully he will transform the legislative branch of our government so that the South will become a nation of law and order. And I know he will do just that, he is the only Southern leader I never heard any complains against.

Hon. the Speaker, Mr. James Wani Igga,

I’m so happy today that we still have hope of true leaders. H. E President Kiir during his interview with the former CIA officer Jack Rice, when he asked President Kiir about the leadership of southern Sudan. Kiir responded by said that “a true leader who wait and faced the charges not those who run went it get worst”.

It true that not always those who appear on the TV are those driving the country, but those behind the TV driving it. We will those few figures with good approach for the south. Today we all supported you without looking for tribal background.
Hon. Thank your commitment that the south will be sustainable states. That is enough don’t tell them more! We already have more!

God bless you with your entire MP’s.

its not easy to let go of power for these Africans we all know that. no matter what you say Osman Taha what is going to happen is that South will have it’s flag at the UN in New York and if you people want to join we can do it later when we feel like it. Europe was once one country and the there were a lot of countries in Europe and now there is only one Europe.
for Sudan to be a good country to live in it has to go into pieces even if Oshay and his like hang themselves
    Peace yo!

This WAni Igga whom you Dinkas praises is nothing if he don’t come down to his own tribe and apologize . He is really a slave of Dinkas’ Kingdom in Juba.
Dinkas occupied Equatoria Region in 2005 with their dead corp. God will punish all Dinkas for their bad acts in Juba.
