Lakes state Community welcome relocation of capital to Ramciel

September 6, 2011 (RUMBEK) – Around a thousand people in Lakes state turned out on Sunday to celebrate the relocation of South Sudan’s capital from Juba in the south of the country to centrally positioned Ramciel.

The Governor of Lakes state Chol Tong Mayay congratulated South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and the country’s newly appointed council of ministers for the bold decision, which comes just less than two months after the country gained its independence.

Sunday’s celebrations were held in Yirol West, Yirol East and Awerial counties.

Mayay said that Lakes state was “very proud” to become the host of the capital for Africa’s 54th country.

Governor Chol said the community in area had offered the land to build the new capital without any conditions to the government.

“I here also would like to thank chiefs and community of Yirol West, Yirol East and community of Awerial for their courageous to offer this land to the government without any condition”.

John Garang, the first president of Southern Sudan, reportedly wanted to place the national capital in Ramciel during his administration, but he died before South Sudan achieved independence and its largest city of Juba became the capital instead.

The area is inhabited by the Chiec community of the Dinka ethnic group, who keep cattle and cultivate crops in the highlands of the area during the dry season, while moving to the Nile marshes during the wet season.

There are conflicting reports over its suitability for larger-scale construction, with some characterising the area as sunken and swampy. Others contend that the rocky highland areas could can support a major city.

LAKES CITIZENS WELCOME NEW CAPITAL

Abraham Maker Gol, a student from Lakes said that the it was a “radical decision that deserves popular support from logical citizens. The issue of land in Juba, was derailing development. In the six years since South Sudan gained self governance there have been political tension in Juba between the states and national legislature and ministries, with both trying to assert their authority on land issues in particular”.

“I am very happy for the president of Republic of South Sudan, to choose Ramciel as [the] capital city of South Sudan”, James Malou a Lakes state resident said in Rumbek. “I am really telling our citizens [that] it is the right time to build international city in that place.”

According to Kau Matueny, having the capital city in Ramciel was the answer for their suffering during the 22 year with the Khartoum government in North Sudan. “It is a privilege and a gift to the people of Lakes State for our contribution in the liberation struggle no matter how marginalised we are – this is our only gift”, he said.

Mark Ochieng, said that it had been a mistake to have the capital in Juba as it was a junction between neighbouring Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. “I love the president’s decision to relocated [the] capital to relate [to] all the 10 states of the Republic of Southern Sudan”, he said.

The new location is near the geographic center of the country and borders the three greater regions of Equatoria, Bahr el Ghazala and Upper Nile. It is very close to the point at which the borders of Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria, Jonglei, and Lakes states meet.

Manyher Makuendit, another resident, cautioned that “there will be advantages and disadvantages of the new capital’s location, warning local inhabitants of the consequences. The capital will be governed by the national government and not by the host state.

Ramciel no longer belongs to the local residents, he said, it now belongs to all Southern Sudanese people regardless of their tribe.

Juba will still remain a formidable commercial capital just like Lagos in Nigeria. So people should not see this as a loss for the local Bari community.

Ramciel is a little bit not strategically defensible position in case of war with North. It is easily accessible from the North.

Thank you Mr. President without forgetting the most hard-working 2 South Sudanese servants by the names of Dr. Marial Benjamin and VP Dr. Riek Machar for pressing the president Kiir to move the capital from the slum capital to the urban capital.

    Sunday,

Idiot. You are suffering from jealousy. Your Juba will never be a capital city. It’ll be a mere city just like other cities in the South or else you will make it your state capital, motherfucker!!

It’s an honour to thank our governors and officials for overwhelmingly hospitality welcoming they offered.
Governor Chol Tong Mayai you’re right, the area is inhabited by the Chiec community of the Dinka ethnic group, who keep cattle and cultivate crops in the highlands of the area during the dry season, while moving to the Nile marshes during the wet season.
One thousand people from Lakes state students; sisters, brothers, elders, children and orphanages who are living in western world, in America, Swaziland in the Hague, Australia, England, Israel, turned out on Sunday to celebrate the relocation of South Sudan’s capital in St John catholic churches.
Law no many people are doing it here in abroad as you know it’s is very hard subjects, we would have come down and celebrate the relocation of the new city. Moreover we are very busy working and studying.
Once again I would like to thank South Sudan government for good choice.

    Sudawg,
Your are son of bitch, Lake state was captured and arabs never recaptured it, how would you say that Ramciel is accessable to arabs. Ramciel simply means,” meeting point” for the South Sudanese, not just commercial city Juba you were talking about, Juba make no sense to most of us and that was why it’s voted out by perliament.
    mind your own bussiness please.

    Jeti,
I just want to inform you that no equatorian really feels jealous because the capital is going to be shifted to ramciel, infact all the equatorians are feel good for your information because you dinkas are so useless to stay with and that will lead to tribal fight so the idea is good because the new capital will be in between the three states and land grabbing wont be a problem since things will be organised.

The other reason is that because you guys are lazy borns who are productively zero in terms of agriculture, we dont want suckers or parasites who make people sick, just see how dirty juba town is! its because of you guys i wonder where God was looking when he was creating you guys!!!!!

Congratulation!!! Mr. president and council of ministers plus those who participate especialy the commitee to make your wise decision to relocate the national capital to center of the country. Of course peaceful area, there will be no more land grabbing complaint. Mr.President make sure this is a one of your best achievemet you did to your fellow south sudanese citizen as you already lead us from the darkness to see the light of the world, you hold a great position to our present generation who were witness the strugle. though there are alot of complaints day/night about your leadship but people have to learn that we will not be satisfied all at a one time no that’s not true let us be patient, stop tribal differences and encouraging unity among our people.
[As we all known that Kiir belong to Dinka by tribe but that’s not how he look like, now he hold national position [presidency] not a union or tribal chief.

What is wrong with the youths of ‘South Sudan’? everyone tend to write a vulger thing in responds to any artcle posted here…do we still have to remain as a nation or some group of our people have now learnt alot and want go sole? Ramcial was proposed as a capitail for the South in the 1960s but one among many reasons it was postposd was that the community where the capitail will be situated will fight over the leaderships and all the privilages it entails.Am afraid the ephuria has made some youths talk about Juba as if it is a foreign city.but in line with the Garanga and SPLM vision, let Kiir take the town to the Village.

Glory to God for the wonderful leadership in the Republic of S. Sudan. Brothers and sisters, this is a decision that the council of ministers took as whole, which council is made up of all people across the states of S.Sudan. Again, the parliament of RSS is composed of all representatives from all the states, which eventually passed the Transitional constitutional of RSS which constitution provides that land belong to the people of RSS, so these tribes mentioned are just part of the tribes that make up the population of RSS and those you called as being IDPs are part of those specified communities in your comments. Let’s restraint ourselves from tribalistic politics. Let’s develop RSS as a whole. Thank you all.

I wonder why James Maker is demanding the capital to be in Rumbek meanwhile Rumbek is inhabited by Agar only. no a single plot given to non Agar, and if I ask u aguestion, is non Lakes secure there in Rumbek? correct me if I am wrong. let it be in that swampy area,it is better then dayly couralling over land issues.and if the gov’t make a mistake to allow u to settle near the new capital, then your claiming of land will start.
