Pigi County commissioner resigns over community disturbances

June 22, 2012 (BOR) – The Commissioner of Pigi County, James Aleu Majak, has submit a resignation letter to the Governor of Jonglei State, Kuol Manyang Juuk, on Friday over disturbances within his county.

His resignation comes after disagreement with community leaders on how to impose rule of law in the county.

Speaking in the press conference, Majak stated that his resignation will allow his community to choose their new commissioner. He accused his county politicians for not been friendly to his leadership.

“I resigned because I do not want to cause trouble in my community if this what community wants, why not to give them the chance to get somebody else. The only problem that we have is the disagreement on how to apply the rule of law. The law says one thing and my community said the others and I said I would rather go with law because that is the constitution.”

Majak said he was going to go to home and spend time with his “beautiful children”.

The former commissioner also voiced concern over the creation of new counties that are going to be created by the Republic of South Sudan.

Sub dividing countries like Pigi was only a short term solution and did resolve the problems on the ground between the Atar and Khorflus community, he said.

“Subdivision of the counties is not the solution at all. I believe politicians need to sit down and try to make a new formula on how to govern this country.”

Jonglei state Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk has accepted the resignation of Majak after some resistance from members of his cabinet.
