Sudan announces urgent plan for solving humanitarian situation in Darfur

AL-FASHIR, July 2, 2004 (SUNA) — Interior Minister and Representative of the President of the Republic in Darfur States Maj. Gen. Abdul-Rahim Mohammed Hussein has announced an urgent plan for solving the humanitarian situations in Darfur in collaboration with the United Nations for 90 days, to be implemented as of this month and funded by the United States of America.

In a press conference he held in Al-Fashir, capital of North Darfur State, Thursday, Maj. Gen. Hussein reviewed his tasks as representative of the President of the Republic, which include maintaining security for the citizens, disarming the outlaws, ensuring flow of humanitarian aid to all affected people, and working for realizing comprehensive political solution for Darfur problem with the participation of all parties.

He added that his ministry is deploying more than 6,000 policemen in Darfur to secure the return of the displaced persons before the rainy season as well as providing them with seeds for farming.

The press conference was also addressed by Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Engineer Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid, who affirmed that the humanitarian situations in Darfur are improving continuously, adding that the government is working to provide more supplies before the rainy season.

Wali [governor] of North Darfur State Osman Mohamed Kibir referred to the government’s keenness on solving the problem peacefully, pointing to the atrocities committed by the rebels including acts of kidnapping and looting, stopping development projects and violating the cease-fire agreement.
