Darfur international follow-up body to meet in El-Fasher

December 7, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The international follow-up committee for the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) will meet in the capital of North Darfur state.

Chaired by the Qatari cabinet minister Ahmed bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, the seventh meeting of the international body aims to discuss the implementation of the peace document and the obstacles hampering the process.

The convening of the meeting in El-Fasher is a positive step aiming to enhance the peace process and boost the ongoing efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement in Darfur, said the Arab League representative in Sudan Salah Abu Halima on Saturday.

The Egyptian diplomat further said the 16 December meeting confirms the strong desire of the international community to reach a sustainable peace and to develop the region.

The meeting will discuss further the ongoing contacts with the rebel non signatory rebel groups as they are expected to meet with the joint chief mediator on 9 December in Addis Ababa to discuss a humanitarian cessation of hostilities.

The international follow-up committee for the DDPD implementation is composed of Sudan’s government, the Liberation and Justice Movement, (LJM), JEM Bashar, African Union, Arab League, Burikna Faso Chad Qatar, Egypt and UN five permanent members as well as UNAMID.

Also; it was also announced in Khartoum that an Arab League committee on Darfur will meet on 17-18 December in Cairo to discuss the follow up of commitments of Arab countries in a special summit organised in 2007 on Darfur region.

The Arab states at the time committed itself to support rehabilitation and development projects in Darfur region.
