Norwegian diplomat commends South Sudanese parties for forming TGoNU

May 15, 2016 (JUBA) – Ambassador of the Royal Norwegian embassy in South Sudan, Tone Tinnes, has commended the parties to the peace agreement signed in August 2015 for forming the transitional government of national unity (TGoNU).

She however said there was need to speed up the implementation of the peace agreement, adding addressing the status of 28 states, cantonment of rival forces across the country as well as reconstitution of the national parliament to comply with the peace agreement.

The call came during a meeting with South Sudan’s First Vice-President, Riek Machar, on Saturday.

The Norwegian diplomat in a statement after their meeting expressed her country’s willingness with other partners to continue to support the implementation of the peace agreement.

Machar on his part assured of his commitment to the implementation of the accord, his press secretary said.

“Dr. Machar during the meeting reiterated his commitment and cooperation with other partners in implementing the peace agreement,” said James Gatdet Dak.

However, he said the parties in the new cabinet have not yet discussed the crucial issues such as the states, cantonment of forces and reconstitution of the national parliament.

The first vice-president has not also been given an office with his staff for the new position, he added.

With the United Kingdom and United States, Norway is a member of Troika countries that lead international efforts to bring peace in South Sudan.
