African Union Mission In Sudan

A Nigerian military delegation led by the Nigerian Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Martin Luther Agwai, paid today a visit to the African Union Mission in Khartoum where it was received by the Acting Head of Mission, Mr Abdourahman Ahmad Ibrahim .

The Head of the African Union Mission, H. E. Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe, was away in Darfur accompanying the Sudanese First Vice President, H.E. Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, to witness tribal reconciliations in Kutum.

The Acting Head of Mission briefed the delegation on the African Union Mission in Darfur. He commended the role of the Nigerian contingent which is the largest of the AMIS troops. He also paid tribute to the tireless efforts of the Nigerian President and current Chairman of the AU, H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, in the search for a peaceful and lasting solution to the Darfur problem.

In this context, Mr. Abdourahman Ahmad Ibrahim expressed the hope that the forthcoming round of talks scheduled to be held in the Nigerian Capital, Abuja, by the end of this month, would be crowned with success.

The Acting Head of Mission further expressed appreciation for the decision of the Nigerian Government to raise the number of its troops in Darfur from the current one battalion of 635 all ranks to three battalions by the end of September 2005.

It is to be noted that during the three-day visit to the Sudan, the Nigerian Chief of Army Staff inspected the Nigerian troops deployed in El Fashir, El Geneina, Nyala, and EL Daein .
