Arab League to attend Abuja peace talks on Sudan’s Darfur

KHARTOUM, June 4, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr Mussa has announced that the league will attend, with a high-level delegation, political negotiations on Darfur in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on June 10, the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported here Saturday.

In a joint press conference held today with the Sudanese foreign minister, Mustafa Osman Ismail, He said the league would be ready by then to send a level of equivalent to the one it sends in meetings with other organizations or parties.

Concerning the interest of the international community to end the Darfur conflict, Amr Musa said the UN, according to its secretary-general, wants to see an end to the conflict and potentials for ending it are available, possible and important.

Head of the Sudanese delegation to the Abuja talks, Majzoub el-Khalifa was quoted as saying that the government is keen to reach a final political solution to the Darfur conflict with rebel groups in the region.
