350 students left in cold after fire guts Ethiopian varsity hostels

ADDIS ABABA, June 16 (AFP) — Some 350 students were left without shelter on Thursday after a fire razed hostels at Ethiopia’s northern Gondar University, but there were no casualities, officials said.

The fire also destroyed property of unknown value in two blocks that house medical students at the university, about 740 kilometres (460 miles) north of the capital Addis Ababa, official Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported, citing a senior university official.

The cause of the inferno is under investigation, the university’s vice president Sintayehu Woldemichael told ENA.
