Ethiopia’s exports to Sudan on the rise

May 31, 2006 (ADDIS ABABA) — Ethiopia has earned about 26 million U.S. dollars from agricultural exports to Sudan during the first nine months of the current budget year, almost 10 million dollars more than a year ago, a customs officer said Wednesday.

The goods were exported through northwest Ethiopia’s Metema and Mankush customs posts.

Getahun Tuji, acting head of northwestern customs coordination office, said in a news release that 600,000 quintals of various types of crops had been exported to Sudan.

He said sesame had earned the country 9.4 million dollars and broad bean 6.8 million dollars.

The rest of the nearly 26 million dollars came mostly from sorghum, ginger and maize, said Getahun.

In recent years, the border trade between the two countries has been on the rise due to concerted efforts to boost trade ties.
