Sudan says dogged to realise peace in eastern Sudan, praises Eritrea

June 29, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese government is determined to settle the eastern Sudan conflict said the Sudanese president. He also praised the Eritrean efforts to end this crisis.

al-bashir_waves_his_hand.jpgSudanese President, and chairman of the ruling National Congress Party, Omar al-Bashir, has said the government would follow the same path it used for putting an end to the war in southern Sudan and to the conflict in Darfur, for resolving the Eastern Sudan crisis.

In this respect he commended Eritrean government efforts which led to the conclusion of the declaration of principles with the Eastern Sudan’s front.

On Monday 19 June, the government and the rebel East Front wrapped up six days of peace talks in Asmara with the signing of a declaration of principles and a ceasefire agreement. Talks will resume on 17 July in the Eritrean capital.

The visit of the Eritrean president to Khartoum on 12/13 June paved the way for the normalization of the bilateral relations between the neighbouring countries.

At the end of Eritrean president visit to Sudan, al-Bashir has affirmed importance of Eritrea’s role in tackling the issue of eastern Sudan as for the deeply rooted relations linking the two countries. He said Eritrea had a remarkable role within the framework of the IGAD to reach peace in the south.

The President has expressed hope in his speech marking the 17th anniversary of the “National Salvation Revolution”, on Thursday morning, that peace would soon prevail all over the country so that efforts would be diverted to development and construction in the country.

The President commended the role played by the various sectors of the Sudanese society leading the National Salvation ship to deck at the bay of security and peace. He said Sudanese achieved peace by their own will and determination is now seeing the implementation phase taking place in a steady and strong manner on the right path and avenue of honoring commitments.

The President has reaffirmed that understanding remain the pillar of all partnership between the National Congress Party and the Sudan People Liberation Movement SPLM. He pointed out that many a party has joined this partnership thus forming the nucleus for the government of National Unity.

He stressed that he would exerted his level best efforts to bring all Sudanese people under the banner of unity, development and peace without giving false hope to the ordinary man. The President said Sudan was heading towards a new phase in Darfur.

He welcomed the advance delegation of the Sudan Liberation Army who arrived to Khartoum two days ago. He said armed militias are now handing over their weapons and taking part in securing the areas.
