SPLM says committed to full implementation of peace deal

Sept 16, 2006 (JUBA) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) reiterated its attachment to the full implementation of the peace deal signed last year to put an end to a decades-long civil war.

At the end of its three-day meeting in Juba Saturday, the SPLM Politburo renewed its commitment to the full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed on 9 January 2005 with the ruling National Congress Party (NCP). The Politburo called upon the NCP to honour its engagements and to implement the Abyei protocol and demarcate boundary between the North and the South accordingly.

The Secretary General Pagan Amum said “the SPLM chairperson reaffirmed in the meeting that Abyei protocol should be implemented whatever it takes. Salav Kiir in addition condemned the press restrictions and pacific protests ban imposed by the ruling NCP since two weeks, reiterating the SPLM commitment to the democratic transition in the country.

“We do not accept any attempt to transgress the constitution or violate liberties,” said Salva Kiir.

Acting Deputy Secretary General of SPLM Yasir Arman said the meeting reaffirmed commitment of SPLM to the new Sudan vision and the strategic approach of the founder of the movement late Dr. John Garang.
