US Nuer demand Paulino Matip to quit South Sudan army
December 7, 2007 (WASHINGTON) — Sudanese Nuer community in the United States of America urged the deputy commander-in-chief of southern Sudan army to quit the SPLM and to not participate in an eventual war that SLPM decides to wage in the country.
UNCONA voiced opposition to the return of war in southern Sudan. It further said such “war is not supported by the majority of Nuer.”
The statement claimed that ” The decision reached by the SPLM‘s Political Bureau to return South Sudan back to war by January, 2008 is not supported by the majority of the Nuer.”
The union of Nuer in North America pointed out that Nuer are the most exposed to killing and displacement, if war starts again in the region. Most of the exploited oil fields are in the Upper Nile state. Production areas are controlled by the Sudan Armed Forces.
“If the war between the North and South breaks out again, the first civilians who would be displaced are Nuer around oilfields. The Dinka-dominated SPLM/A wants to use Paulino Matip to start war in January, 2008, as stated by Lt.Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit.”
The UNCONA accused “a small clique within the SPLM who is agenda is to serve foreign and tribal interests.” It further said that the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement could be handled
Paulino Matip, a long time ally of Khartoum, disbanded his Southern Sudan Defense Force (SSDF) and merged with the SPLA since January 2006.
The UNCONA, in the past, supported Juba Declaration related to the merger of SSDF forces with SPLA and hailed peace among South Sudanese. However it now demands Nuer traditional leadership to “ostracise any Nuer who continue to be member of the SPLM.”
Last month, Nuer union in North America supported the candidacy of Telar Deng, former state minister at the presidency, for the position of the secretary General of the SPLM. After public statements against the SPLM Secretary general, Telar was sacked from the SPLM.

Union of Nuer Community in North America (UNCONA)
December 7, 2007 — The leadership of Nuer community in North America has unanimously passed a resolution on Dec, 5th, 2007, calling on Lt-Gen. Paulino Matip to quit the SPLA. The Supreme Council of UNCONA has decided, in no uncertain terms, that all the Nuer in the SPLA should not participate in the war which is being orchestrated by Lt-Gen. Salva Kiir. The decision reached by the SPLM‘s Political Bureau to return South Sudan back to war by January, 2008 is not supported by the majority of the Nuer.
The leadership of Nuer community does not want the Nuer to die again after the conclusion of Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) on Jan, 9th, 2005. If the war between the North and South breaks out again, the first civilians who would be displaced are Nuer around oilfields. The Dinka-dominated SPLM/A wants to use Paulino Matip to start war in January, 2008, as stated by Lt.Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit.
The Nuer all over the World calls upon Paulino Matip to leave the SPLA. The Nuer people do not want to die again for the benefit of a small clique within the SPLM whose agenda is to serve foreign and tribal interests. Lt-Gen. Salva Kiir has failed miserably and wants to ignite another war to deflect accusations of incompetence. The slow implementation of the CPA is something which could be handled peacefully through the help of international community. Salva Kiir cannot return the South back to war without taking into account the destruction the war would cause in terms of human lives.
The leadership of UNCONA has therefore passed the following resolutions in its emergency meeting of December, 5th, 2007:
1. UNCONA calls for Lt-Gen. Paulino Matip to leave the SPLA so that the Nuer would not participate in the war.
2. UNCONA calls for Nuer unity in which all the Nuer must be in one side to confront the SPLM, which is a political tool of one tribe whose agenda is to undermine the Nuer ethnic group politically, socially and internationally.
3. UNCONA calls upon Nuer Chiefs to ostracize any Nuer who continues being a member of SPLM.
4. UNCONA calls upon Nuer White Army to defend Nuer-land in the event of war between the SPLM and the NCP. Each Nuer chief must organize their White Armies in preparation against the SPLM.

Gen. Paulino Matip is a south sudan general not a Nuer general. He is representing the interest of South Sudanese in his capacity. I don’t see any reason he should not join the war if at all it started next year. It is not only in Nuerland that you will find oil fields. There are oilfields in Jonglei, Bor areas, Abyei and near Melut. Therefore, jallaba will struck us alike. If UNCONA want to join Beshir instead then they should do it early because SPLA will not differentiate between jallaba and their servants.

Those few drunkard Nuers want to blight the integrity of Nuer for their own selfish interests, shame on them. I am not Nuer, but I don’t think all Nuers in North America really support that helpless idea. What their shallow mind don’t know, Kiir is not taking South Sudanese to war, but the war did not ever finish.
I even thought Matip withdraw from SPLA as they alleged, there is no way Nuer will escape the result of that war, because they are locate in oil field and Arabs are not looking for Dinka, but they are looking for oil. We should stand together as South Sudanese or else live as self-assign slave of your own country.

This is the most ignorant, most disturbing, and most narrow minded article I’ve ever read. It is obvious why this author did not put his or her name on this piece.
First of all what is going on in that little bird brain of yours, have you gone coo coo? Don’t you realize the current situation in southern Sudan. This is not a decision by all Nuers in North America, I know this because I am a Nuer and I think your idea is ludacris. It is people like you who try to give the Nuer people a bad name.
How dare you even think of using the Nuer name to promote your personal tribalism. Lt-Gen Paulino Matip is performing his duty as a Southern Sudanese citizen, a category you might not associate yourself with. South Sudan’s future has never looked brighter than it does now with the signing of the CPA. All those years of war and you are calling on him to let the Southern Sudanese people down? Well you obviously have no moral values.
Anyways, who ever you are, next time you you decide to post an opinion keep it personal. You have a wicked mindset that will only bring destruction to Southern Sudan. Also by dragging all nuers into it, you have not only offended me, you have offended all Nuers, and you have offended all united southern Sudanese in general.

It is unfortionate that the people who styled themseves as Nuer communities in the US seem to be out of touch with the reali9ties on t6he ground at home. One has been made to assume that these guys should be better placed to follow up the events happening at home accurately as they unfold so as to give well considered opinions that can help boose the unity and resolve of the Southern people and the marginalized communities in their struggle against the common enemy the Jallaba of the NCP which is poised to abrobogate the CPA completely in the same way they had done to similar agreements before.
In the first place, the group who called themslves as representing the Nuer communities in US, before taking such stand should think of what made them to migrate to USA in the first place.Was it a mere voyoge to look for advantures? Was it not because of a real danger which threatened their very existance in the Sudan and from whom and why? I leave these questions for you to answer because you know their answers.
Brothers, allow me to still ask you the following questions:
!- Who told you that General Matip Nhial represent only the Nuer in the SPLA? 2- Who told you that there are separate SPLA, one representing the Nuer, beside the only known SWPLA which fought for the liberation of the south and the marginalzed areas? 3- Who told you that the SPLA is waging war agains the North in January 2008?
Let me lead you abit through the above few questions. For your information, General Matip had joined the ranks of yhe SPLA by the famouse Juba Declearation. He is now the D/Chief of Staff of the SPLA and not D/chief of the Staff of Nuer SplA of your creation. He has joined the liberation struggle perminently and is supporting the CPA upto the refrendum for the total independance of the South Sudan in 2011.He will not be detered by such rhetorics which are absolutely baseless. There is no separate SPLA under General Matip command besides the oly SplA whose Commander- In- Chief is Lt. General Kiir.
You might have been misinformed by the enemies of the CPA among which are some of the Nuer activists who have entrenched themselves inside Jallaba pockets for their own self interests. The recent dispute over the CPA implentation was quite real. The Jallaba was vent to drag their feet and were reneging on the implentation of the CPA and without sounding the alarm bells by the leadership of the SPLM, they were going a head with the total cancellation of the CPA.This could not be acceptable to the whole community of the South and the marginalized people. It had to be challenged by all means, even if that meant a return to war.
So what! if peple return to war in defence of the CPA which was dearly bought with the life blood of our fallen heroes and heroines.Have you not learned that Preident Omer El Beshir decleared war by calling to arm his Holy wariors ( Majahadeen), just because he was questioned as to why he was ill implementing the CPA? What do you do in this case if the Northern army attack the SPLA with an aim to reverse things to square one? Do you expect us Southerners to run to the bush again and the neighbouring countries and leave the South to them. Should not the SPLA and the entire Southerners not face the foes to defend our land. Are you cowards who yearn war when it is imposed. You the so called leaders of Nuer in diapora specially those of you in USA are really shaming the Nuer in general. I Think you have forgotten that the Majority of the Nuers are here inside the Sudan includind your mothers, father, brothers and sisters and the majority of your relatives. This great majority does not share your views. Your views are are most likely influenced by a few minority clique of Nuer opportunists who have been since colaborating with the Jallabas in Khartoum. These groups are beeing used by the Jallabas to divide the ranks and file of the Southern peopls to weaken by creating rifts between them as is now potraid in your present memorandum which is meant to divide the Southerners.
The Nuers are agreat peopl who have played great role in the Southern struggle since independance. It was unfortionate that due to uncontolable circuntances that inflicted the SPLA at the time of the Sruggle, certain thing happened resulting to some Nuer elements deserting the ranks of the SPLA to join the enemy ranks- a phenominon that is natural in any liberation struggle. It is now anybody view that when the conditions that made them desert are no longer there, all the Nuers should now resume their rightful place in the struggle with the rest of the Southerners and never again should they play the role black leg in the Southern liberation movement.
I am therefore, appealing to you brothers who call yourselves as Nuer leaders in US and elsewhere in diaspora, to work for unity of our people in the whole Southern Suadan – for UNITY IS ETRENGTH and is the only weapon that will bail you out of your sufferng. It i8s realoly a parodox to many of us that those who should be considered as enlightened like you, should still think like uneducated peopl by preaching disunity and discrd among southerners.

His Excellency the Chairman of SPLA/M and the President of Southern Sudan General Salva kiir Mayardit had not decared war and he got to be trusted in carrying out his national duties.He is a man who has no desire to declare war or imposing threat to any one nor does he has the desire to defeat the NCP however,he will not have otherwise if SPLA/M IS provoked but to put machineries of self defend in place in order not to be shaken by Northen waves.
The union article has dragged the entire community of Nuer through the mud in the course of chating the destiny of the south.Such a disgraceful expectation of calling His Excelency General Paulino Motif to quit SPLA/M by the Uninon of Nuer Community is absolutely unhealthy toward our political destiny.Your call was tribal oriented, non-constructive and fall low in nurturing patriotism.
We should not be scared and shaken by political waves of war if imposed on us by the North but to defend our resources wherever they may be in the Southern Sudan.The Union should foster the table of hromany,peace,love and unity rather than disintegration of self.we expect more and value your concern only if it is constructive and truth oriented.

Dear Nuer Union,
It is good to call off your participartion in forthcoming war as you put it, no matter which source provided you with the information that SPLM is planning war in January, 2008.
From my own perspective, the reverse is true, as a union, you want Matip to wage war again SPLM/A in January,2008. And if so, what kind of mind do you people possess? I think this say is true, ” even if a donkey is taken to United States it will still come back as donkey”. If you are in peaceful country like United States and you still have ill feeling of black African fighting themselves without a mere objective, that denote you will never change, come rain, come sunshine.
Mind you, Matip is a war lord who have no sense of humanity and if you people believe in him, then what aspiration are you preaching to other? If Matip was a learned politician like Machar, then we should stand firm in support for him because he has a vision for Southern Sudanese. Matip is not in SPLM/A beause of Nuer, ask him he will tell you the right answer. I doubt if this union is well represented. I wish this message was one man decision who want to spoil the dignity of Nuer people world wide.
It is not a time for us Southern Sudanese to divide ourselves or call for war. Enough is enough, what we want is to negiotiate our differences in peaceful mean. I think no one benefit from the war we fought against each other. We all know who is who in animals Kingdom.

To my own analysis through conceptual understanding, I hope there is nothing that can irritate Southerners, simply b’se those gangs of UNCONA are just barking dogs of NCP who wanted to cause chaos among united Southrners…leave them alone to continue barking until their throat surrender. After all Lt-Gen. Paulino is for SPLA/M, and is the best among people who understood the “LONG LIVE VISION” that the late Dr. Garang strived for, for the last 21 years.
