3 people killed as tribal clashes erupt in Darfur
December 16, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — A tribal conflict that broke out between two Arab tribes left three people dead and three more missing.
The daily Al-Sahafa quoted unidentified tribal sources as saying that the group from the Al-Salamat tribe along with bandits launched an attack on the city of Fayad, in South Darfur, which is the stronghold of Al-Habaniya tribe.
The deputy leader of Al-Habaniya tribe Al-Bashiri Sheik Al-Deen said that gunmen from Al-Salamat tribe made it a habit to attack them despite the presence of government troops 5 kilometers away.
United Nations officials confirmed the clashes saying the situation was “intensifying”.
The Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) signed in May 2006 between the Sudanese government and one rebel faction has failed to stem the violence.
International experts estimate 200,000 people have died in the conflict, which Washington calls genocide, a term European governments are reluctant to use. The Sudan government says 9,000 people have been killed.
