Sudanese security arrests former member of Sovereign Council

February 13, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese security service, Sunday, arrested Mohamed al-Faki,  former MEMBER of the Sovereign Council and Head of the Empowerment Removal Committee (ERC).

Al-Faki’s arrest follows the arrest last week of two other leading members of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) and  Wagdi Salih an ERC former Member and Khalid Omer Youssif former Cabinet Affairs Minister.

According to a statement issued by the Unionist Alliance, a security force intercepted a car carrying al-Faki as he was heading from his home to the party premises.

The security force stopped the vehicle and took him to an unknown destination.

The former member of the Sovereign Council had been arrested together with several officials and political leaders of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) after the October 25, 2021 coup carried out by the head of the Sovereign Council, Abdel-Fatih al-Burhan.

Both the police and the public prosecutor’s office denied ordering his arrest, al-Faki’s family said.

In an interview with Sudan Television  Saturday, al-Burhan denied that the second wave of arrests was political. He stressed that it was the result of independent judicial decisions.

In statements to Al-Jazeera TV after the arrest, FFC leading member Yasir Arman said al-Faki’s arrest confirmed that al-Burhan’s call for consensus was inconsistent with the facts.

He added that there are 145 political prisoners in the regime’s prisons, from the FFC and the Resistance Committees.

Al-Burhan’s coup triggered pro-democracy protests that have continued for more than three months.

UN has launched a process aiming to end the stalemate and called on the military leaders to create a conducive environment for an intra-Sudanese dialogue they propose to facilitate.
