Al-Burhan meets SRF leaders on April 5, 2022

April 5, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The head of the Sovereign Council welcomed the imitative of the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) to end the political crisis and resume the democratic transitional process suspended after the coup of October 2021.

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in his capacity as leader of the military component, on Tuesday met with three SRF leaders Idriss, Agar and Hajar who are also members of the Sovereign Council and Osama Said the alliance’s spokesman and leader of the Beja Congress.

The meeting discussed the SRF initiative to restore the transitional government on the basis of the constitutional declaration of 2019 and hold a national dialogue involving all the political forces to discuss governance, constitution-making, and elections.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Sovereign Council said that al-Burhan stressed the need to unite efforts to end the current crisis and welcomed the SRF initiative “based on dialogue and partnership”.

During his meeting, he further “stressed the importance of expanding the base of political participation to include all political components and forces except the (dissolved) National Congress Party to reach a full consensus, based on dialogue to resolve the current political crisis in the country,” reads the statement.

Speaking to the media after the meeting the SRF Spokesman said that al-Burhan made some observations about their initiative without elaborating on it.

He disclosed they would meet the other political forces in the upcoming days.

In its initiative, the SRF said in favour of amending the constitutional declaration to achieve a comprehensive political settlement provided that such amendments do not prejudice the Juba Agreement for Peace in Sudan.

The alliance of armed groups reaffirmed that the military component is a partner in the success of the December Revolution and the transitional period as agreed in the constitutional declaration.

Before meeting al-Burhan, the SRF called for the implementation of confidence-building measures including the end of violence against protesters, the release of detained FFC leaders and members of the Empowerment removal committee and the lift of the state of emergency.
