21 locomotives from China in Sudan next week: official
July 14, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The first batch of locomotives from China will arrived in Sudan next week, a government official announced on Thursday.
The Director General of Sudan Railways Authority, Engineer Walid Mahmud Ahmed said 21 of the 34 new locomotives arrive in the country on July 20.
A locomotive is a rail transport vehicle that provides the motive power for a train.
Ahmed, SUNA reported, said all arrangement have been completed to receive the locomotives, adding that 15 Chinese engineers and technicians from the manufacturer would be in the country for the trial run.
The ship carrying the locomotives will arrive at Port Sudan harbor on July 24.
According to the Director General, arrival of the locomotives will bring a major shift in the railways’ performance, stressing that the new locomotives were manufactured with modern technological specifications from CRRC Ziang Company, a Chinese state-owned holding company.
The company was awarded the bid to supply the 34 new locomotives.
Ahmed stressed that the new locomotives have great design capacities for transportation that would contribute to the country’s transport operations.
He further revealed that railway authority had drawn up work plans to receive these locomotives for transportation at the strategic and vital sectors for transporting furnace to thermal power stations, in addition to transporting goods such as wheat, sugar, agricultural inputs and fertilizers.
