advocacy groups call to boycott Sudan’s coup leader during UN General Assembly

The participation of the coup leader has not been officially announced, but Sudanese officials confirmed to Sudan Tribune his participation at the annual gathering where the world leaders also hold bilateral meetings.

“We call on member states and their delegations to boycott any meetings attended or addressed by General al-Burhan and to abide by their prior statements and positions – including the statements and resolutions of the United Nations and the Security Council – to act in full support of the return of a civilian-led transitional government in Sudan,” read a statement extended to Sudan Tribune on Wednesday.

Never Again Coalition, Jews Against Genocide, Sudan Unlimited, Sudan Human Rights Network, Jewish World Watch, Anglican Persecuted Church Network, Democracy for the Arab World Now and Sudanese Front Against the Coup are among the signatories of the call.

They added that al-Burhan’s participation is “a reprehensible normalization with tyranny”.

“Any signal of welcome by the United Nations or by member states lends legitimacy to the coup and fuels the spread of the disease of dictatorship in Africa,” stressed the statement.

Sudan Tribune learned that the advance team has already arrived in New York to organize the programme and logistics of the al-Burhan visit to New York.

Sources say he would be there on September 22.

He is expected to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, but there are no further details about the visit.

Sudanese Diaspora groups in the United States plan to stage protests against his visit.

Al-Burhan on October 25, 2021, overthrew the civilian transitional government triggering political instability and a pause in international support.

After the coup, the security forces killed some 120 people for participating in peaceful protests calling for the restoration of the civilian transitional government.
