Al-Beshir reviews Sudan’s national security structure

KHARTOUM, Feb 26, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The Sudanese regime has started to review the country’s national security structure, in preparation for the transitional period during which the government will share power with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, (SPLM) led by John Garang.

A well-informed source told the Dubai based al-Bayan daily newspaper that external and internal security units would be merged in one service during the transitional period, as it was the case before 2001.

Al-Bashir’s resolution to dismiss General Abdelkarim Abdallah from the head of Sudanese intelligence and appoint the head of national security, General Salah Abdallah Qush, as head of intelligence, was nothing but a step to return to the merging of the two units of intelligence and security into one.

The reorganization of security had started at the beginning of last week, following the unexpected appointment of the deputy head of intelligence, Yahya Hussein, as minister at the presidency.

Yahya Hussein is a candidate for the Interior Ministry seat and Al-Bashir’s closest aide, the newspaper indicated.
