Ethiopia launches a new coffee brand

May 11, 2008 (ADDIS ABABA) — The Ethiopian government earlier this week launched a new coffee brand which is believed to boost the income of the nation’s coffee producing farmers.

“We are launching a new coffee brand to champion Ethiopia’s famous, unique and distinctive fine coffee in the international market” Getachew Mengistie, Director General of the Ethiopian Intellectual property office said.

Though Ethiopia is a historic birth place of coffee and Africa’s leading coffee exporter Ethiopia is way back in proactively managing and promoting its famous fine coffee.

The move Ethiopia took is a land mark moment for the nation says Getachew.
“This is a land mark moment for Ethiopia and we are proud to project the identity of Ethiopian coffee this way and we look forward our coffee farmers to reap the rewards in short and long terms.”

The brand new identity comprises a central logo for Ethiopia fine coffee which takes its inspiration from the coffee bean itself, together with individual designs for each of the coffee designations.
According to the official this is the first time that an African nation to under take such a contemporary approach to boost its economy.

From experts point of view the new project is believed to pave a new era in booming Africa’s economy and independence.

Licensing agreements using the brand in their particular market from North America, Europe and Asia as license is required to future Ethiopia’s brand new.
Last year Ethiopia exported 176,000 tones of coffee to the United States and other European countries.

The horn of Africa’s nation this year expects to ship out 220,000 metric tones of coffee to be collected from its 15 million coffee farmers across the nation

Last year Ethiopia resolved a dispute with US- based star bucks coffee chain over trade marks after the two sides cut a deal in principle to sign a licensing marketing deal which gives recognition to the country’s ownership of its premium varieties of coffee beans.
