Lafon County SPLM-IO chairperson joins ruling party

April 7, 2024 (LAFON) – The armed opposition (SPLM-IO) chairperson for Lafon County in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria State, Ukongo Martin Agura has defected to the country’s ruling party (SPLM) led by President Salva Kiir.

Agura submitted his resignation letter on March 22, 2024 and committed to SPLM.

The SPLM County Secretariat warmly welcomed Agura the country’s ruling party.

The former SPLM-IO chairperson for Lafon reinstated his commitment and allegiance to the SPLM party and urged the party members to work as a team.

He said he worked hard to ensure the ruling party achieve its objectives, calling upon members to embrace spirit of comradeship by supporting one another.

“Working against one another in the party is unlawful,” stressed Agura.

He welcomed the ruling party members for welcoming him into the ruling party.

“This is a good gesture of cooperation and unity within the party,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the SPLM county chairperson, Okach Magiso Agweri appreciated the decision taken by Agura for rejoining the SPLM, stressing that Lafon county is a stronghold of the historical party since the liberation struggle days until now.

“The positive turnout of the people during mobilizations and registration of the party members is a self-evidence of the massive support and domination of the SPLM party in Lafon county,” he remarked.

Agweri said the SPLM promotes democracy and encourages politics of pluralism.

He said no other political parties have shown their presence in Lafon County, although some sons and daughters of Lafon county claim to represent other political parties in government, legislative assemblies and independent commissions.

“The SPLM will continue in a transparent manner and open to provide democratic leadership to the citizen of the Republic of South Sudan,” he stressed.

The Pari community chairperson, Samuel Ubur Ukech also quit the SPLM-IO for SPLM.
