Egyptian president to visit Khartoum, Juba on Monday

November 9, 2008 (WASHINGTON) – The Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak will make a previously unannounced visit to Sudan on Monday, a source in Cairo told Sudan Tribune.

Mubarak’s visit will last a few hours in which will also include a stop at the Southern Sudan’s capital Juba.

This is the first time Mubarak makes a visit to Southern Sudan since assuming power in 1981.

It is not clear what prompted the surprise visit but the Sudanese foreign minister Deng Alor was in Cairo last week and delivered a message from president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir.

Cairo expressed concern that the indictment of Al-Bashir by the International Criminal Court (ICC) may complicate matters in Sudan.

Last month the Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson Hussam Zaki said in press statements that “Sudan is in danger”.

“There are many things in Sudan that are hard to describe as easy or unproblematic because situation in Khartoum is very complex” Zaki said.

The Egyptian diplomat said that his government senses “imminent danger” surrounding their southern neighbor if regional or international parties fail to perform their roles “with great accuracy”.

Mubarak will be accompanied be his foreign minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and intelligence director Omer Suleiman, the source added.

    Welcome to Juba Hosni Mubarak.
However, come clean of Arab-minded politics.
Distance yourself from Al Bashir and tell our leaders what they want to hear.
Our relationship with Egypt seem to be on the right track except in some few matters like Nile water.

    Anyhow welcome president.
You will see the shanty houses in Juba-war-ravaged.
