Drones hit Sudan army base in Atbara
November 27, 2024 (ATBARA) – Two drones attacked a Sudanese army artillery base in Atbara, River Nile State, late on Wednesday, military sources said.
This follows drone attacks on Atbara airport earlier this week. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are suspected of carrying out these attacks as a prelude to an assault on the area.
Sources told Sudan Tribune that one explosives-laden “suicide drone” hit near the officers’ quarters mosque. A second drone exploded in a field at the base’s eastern training camp.
Jamming equipment apparently prevented the drones from reaching the main artillery institute, which houses weapons, ammunition and barracks.
Residents of Atbara and nearby Al-Fadlab reported being awakened by loud explosions. It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.
RSF commanders have threatened to attack Atbara and Shendi, both in River Nile State, where the army has a strong presence. The army and its allies are on high alert for a potential attack.
