Sudan: Top UN official condemns attack on WPF compound
December 21, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – The Acting United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Sheldon Yett has condemned Thursday’s bombardment of the World Food Programme (WFP) compound in Yabus in Sudan’s Blue Nile State.
“The violent killing of these aid workers is unconscionable,” he said in a statement.
He extended his condolences to the families and loved ones of the three WFP workers killed.
“Obligations under the International Humanitarian Law are clear, and humanitarian workers and facilities must be protected at all times,” Yett noted, adding “The role of humanitarian workers across Sudan is to provide lifesaving services for people amid the ongoing conflict ravaging the country. Violence against civilians and attacks on civilian infrastructure must end.”
The Acting Humanitarian Coordinator acknowledged the Sudanese government’s reiteration of its commitment to adhere to International Humanitarian Law and to ensuring the safety of humanitarian workers, as well as its commitment to conduct a thorough investigation into this tragic incident.
Similarly, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres condemned all attacks on UN and aid personnel and facilities, calling for a thorough investigation.
He said the latest incident underscores the devastating toll that Sudan’s brutal conflict is having on millions of people in need and the humanitarians trying to reach them with life-saving assistance.
The Secretary-General called on the parties to adhere to their obligations to protect civilians, including aid personnel, as well as humanitarian premises and supplies, while stressing that attacks must not be directed against them and all feasible precautions must be taken to avoid harming them.
He emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire, saying the United Nations will continue to back international mediation efforts and work with all relevant stakeholders to help bring an end to the war.
