Sudan army anti-aircraft repel drone attacks in Port Sudan, Suakin for fourth day
May 7, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Drone attacks hit Sudan’s temporary capital, Port Sudan, for a fourth consecutive day on Wednesday, witnesses said, with army anti-aircraft defences engaging the unmanned aircraft.
Early on Wednesday, eyewitnesses told Sudan Tribune they heard three explosions near the army’s Flamingo naval base, north of Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast.
It marked the third such attack on the Flamingo base during recent drone assaults on the city. The Sudanese government has blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the wave of attacks.
Army anti-aircraft defences engaged the drones targeting the base, reportedly for the first time during the attacks on Flamingo, according to the Sudan Tribune reporter. Smoke was seen rising from the direction of the base.
In Suakin, about 50 km (30 miles) south of Port Sudan, army anti-aircraft also engaged drones attempting to attack the city.
A drone crashed into a goods warehouse at Prince Osman Digna Port in Suakin, causing limited damage, local sources told Sudan Tribune.
Port Sudan has faced drone attacks since Sunday. The Sudanese government has accused the RSF of carrying out these attacks and has alleged the United Arab Emirates backs the paramilitary group.
Previous targets in the city have included Port Sudan Airport, a power substation, oil depots near the southern port and in the south of the city, and the Marina Hotel in central Port Sudan, close to government buildings.
