CORRECTION: Census shows South Sudan population at 8.2 million: report

(Corrects second paragraph showing Darfur population from 8.2 million to 7.5 million)

April 13, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The results of the fifth census conducted last year will show that Southern Sudan account for 20% of the population, a newspaper reported today.

The Al-Sahafa independent newspaper quoting “reliable sources” said that the population of Khartoum topped 5 million; Darfur 7.5 million; South Sudan 8.2 million.

Furthermore, the number of displaced Southerners in North Sudan has been reported as 500,000.

The sources said that the South expressed reservation over the results noting that the dispute “may be resolved politically”.

Last week Sudanese census officials expressed satisfaction that the process conducted conforms to the international standards in terms of coverage and impartiality.

The census monitoring and follow up committee chairman Dr. Abdel-Bagi Al-Gailani said that monitors from over 20 countries observed the process and vouched for its integrity.

The South Sudan officials have warned that they will not accept results reflecting its populations as being less than the third of the country.

The fifth Sudan Population and Housing Census, a milestone in the implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was conducted from 22nd to 30th April 2008. It was the first all inclusive census for people of southern Sudan since the country’s independence in January 1956.

This week the SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum disclosed that “discrepancies” are behind the delay in releasing the census outcome.

Amum said that “the results may be questionable and we do not know whether it would be valid ground for the upcoming general elections”.

“Probably without the census results we could rely on former statistics such as the 1956 census” he added.

The census will help decide how wealth and power are ought to be shared in Sudan.

The north-south border crosses oilfields producing some 500,000 barrels per day of crude.

But the census committee said today that there were no issues faced in the South and that no objections were raised.

The census results are unacceptable.South Sudan population can never be equal to the Darfur’s.We have now seen unfairness in the census.

To the South Sudanese politicians, especially the President-Kiir Mayardit-We would surely be expecting a reaction from you this time to disagree with such unfair results.

South Sudan has been underestimated, and it will never be acceptable. We will rather resort to something in disparity in regards to the coming elections.

This’s surely proving to all the South Sudanese that there’s no stand behind the Comprehensive peace agreement. What’s fucking Khartoum, should we decide to wage war against the m.

THE CENSUS RESULTS ARE SOMETHING RATHER THAN A SHAM!

It is a damn a show for sure! In a country of forty-one million, noway that 8.2 million are the one living in South Sudan. That damn figure can be for equartoria only leave the rest of the territory.

There must be a recount otherwise, these results should be declared as sham and not accurate.

Is Southern Sudan account for 20% of the Sudan population? These dullards with no imagination in Khartoum might be crazy otherwise there is need for a new evaluation or even total objection.

The imputation should go back; only result above 15 millions can be accepted. How can Darfur and the autonomous South Sudan be of same population?

This should be a wakeup call for our sleepy leaders, who ignored civilians slaughtering.
It took one week for Lou-Nuer and Murle to commit mass slaughter to each other while our government officials are sitting in Pibor and all over Jonglei payams with phones, which they can use to call for an army intercession

It will be too late before all our people murdered each other day by day while our enemy is sipping tea and watching TV on our courtyard.

8million or 2million! Who care? Vote for independence any way
Eritrea is 3 million and a strong young nation, both North and South Sudan respect Eritrea, for the price for freedom is like getting closer to God and away from bondage.
We have professional fighters to defend the people and our resource, all we have to do is votes:
    1. Vote to be free and proud citizen of the great land of the mother Nile (Kiir)
    2. Don’t know what to do? Rather remain in bondage and be second-class or slaved citizen in your ancestor conquered land, the Islamic Re-thuggery of Sudan.
