Former Darfur combatants integrated into Sudan army

May 4, 2009 (EL FASHER) – A group of fighters from various ex-rebel factions integrated into the Sudan Armed Forces on Sunday, reported the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

The 44 combatants were from factions that had signed the Declaration of Commitment (DoC) to the Darfur Peace Agreement of 2006.

Though the groups had remained aligned with government forces since that time, yesterday marked their official integration after a six months training programme.

The ceremony was organized by the Commission of Security Arrangement which is part of the Transitional Darfur Regional Authority (TDRA) under the patronage of Minister of Defence Abdurrahim Mohammad Hussein.

Members were from factions named Sudan Liberation Army (Mother), Sudan Liberation Army (Peace Wing), Sudan Liberation Army (Free Will), Justice and Equality Movement (Peace Wing) and Popular Force for Rights and Democracy, a break-away faction from Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).

The integration is overseen by UNAMID, whose mandate is to assist the parties in the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement.

Since 2008, a total of 1,500 ex-combatants have been integrated into the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) in addition to 18 officers into the Government of Sudan police. However, many of the combatants of SLM-Minnawi — the main command that signed the 2006 treaty — deserted in 2006 to form another insurgent group called SLM-Unity, rather than join arms with the government forces.
