Sudan official news agency (SUNA) said that Bassole met with the mayor of Al-Waha locality Abdel-Rahman Mohamed Essa with the presence of other political figures.

Bassole discussed efforts to reach a peaceful settlement in Darfur emphasizing the necessity to engage all parties in the process particularly the rebel groups.

The mayor was quoted as saying that his locality supports the “increasing attention by the joint mediator towards the issues and challenges of Darfuris towards peace and stability”.

Essa urged the international community to help in returning Darfur “to the way it was in the beginning”.

The two months talks between Sudanese government and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) adjourned in Qatar without making tangible progress in the negotiations.

Sudan and JEM had resumed meetings after the suspension of talks by the rebel group to protest against the non-implementation of the goodwill agreement signed last February.

The ongoing mediation which is sponsored by the Qatari government is collectively supported by the African Union, the European Union, the United Nations and the international community particularly the US, China and Japan
